Are tomatoes high in Calories?

July 7, 2023 by Prashanth Cheruku, M.Tech Leave a Comment

Tomatoes, often classified as vegetables in culinary terms, are actually botanically considered fruits. However, when it comes to their Calorie content, tomatoes are one of the lowest among foods.

If we take 100 grams of tomatoes, they provide a mere 20 Calories or 84 kilojoules of energy. This remarkably low-calorie count can be attributed to their high-water content.

In fact, 100 grams of tomatoes contain about 94.5 grams of water, making them an excellent choice for those seeking to manage their weight.

In addition to being low in Calories, tomatoes are a treasure trove of essential nutrients. They are a rich source of vitamins such as vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin K, and a few B-vitamins. Furthermore, tomatoes provide an ample amount of the essential mineral potassium, which is known to play a role in maintaining healthy blood pressure levels.

But that’s not all—tomatoes also boast an impressive array of antioxidants. These include Lycopene, Beta-carotene, Lutein, and Zeaxanthin. Lycopene, in particular, has been linked to a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, while also showing potential in protecting against certain types of cancers, such as prostate cancer.

Moreover, the presence of Lutein and Zeaxanthin in tomatoes can contribute to the reduction of eye diseases like Age-related Macular Degeneration and cataracts.

In conclusion, not only are tomatoes a delicious addition to our diet, but they also offer the added benefit of being remarkably low in Calories. I highly recommend incorporating tomatoes into your daily meals to harness their abundant nutrients for your overall health and well-being.
