Nutrition facts & Health benefits of Soft pretzels

Pretzel is a baked bread of German or Alsatian origin. It is made from a fermented dough that is shaped into a knot.

There is soft as well as hard pretzels. In this post & video I am going to talk about the nutrition facts & health benefits of soft pretzels.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates constitute the majority portion of soft pretzels. Around 69% of the total composition of them is carbohydrate.

Soft pretzels are not a good source of dietary fibre as it constitutes just 1.7% of the total weight. A good thing about soft pretzels is that just 0.25% of their total weight is sugars.

Fat & Protein

Soft pretzels contain very little amount of fat. Total fat content present in them is just 3.1%.

Soft pretzels contain 8.2% protein. It’s not a very high amount. Hard pretzels contain a slightly higher amount of protein at 10%.

Water

Water constitutes around 15% of the total weight of soft pretzels. Whereas hard pretzels contain just around 3% moisture. The higher content of water in the soft pretzels make their texture soft. But, at the same time the water content present in them makes the soft pretzels more perishable when compared to hard pretzels.

Energy

100 grams of soft pretzels provide 338 Calories or 1420 KJ of energy. Compared to many other fried snacks these contain considerably low amount of energy thanks to their low-fat content.

Health benefits

Soft pretzels contain a few vitamins and minerals in moderate to good amounts.

100 grams of soft pretzels contain close to 22% of the daily value of Iron and riboflavin (i.e., Vitamin B2).

They are good sources of Selenium & Thiamin (i.e., Vitamin B1). 100 grams of soft pretzels provide a daily value of 31% Selenium & 34% Thiamin. 

Close to 27% of the daily value of Niacin is contained in 100 grams of soft pretzels.

Conclusion

  1. Overall soft pretzels are moderately healthy food Items that are suitable for wide range of age groups.
  2. They do not contain too many calories & also contain very low quantity of fat.
  3. They are good sources of some vitamins & minerals such as iron, Selenium, riboflavin, niacin & Thiamin.
  4. Sodium content of them is not very high. 100 grams of soft pretzels contain just around 9% daily value of Sodium.
