Can I use human vitamin A supplements to my dog?

April 12, 2022 by Prashanth Cheruku, M.Tech Leave a Comment

The vitamin A supplements made for humans should not be given to dogs.

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin. When dogs consume more vitamin A than they need, the rest is stored in the liver and kidneys for later use.

If the dogs are given supplements without the recommendations of a veterinarian, then the excess amounts can be toxic.

In general, it is ideal to provide foods that are rich in various vitamins and minerals so that there is no need for the supplements. If you are feeding commercial dog food to your dog, depending on the brand it may already contain some vitamins and minerals.

Excess levels of vitamin A in dogs can lead to peeling of the skin, drowsiness, poor reproductive performance and joint abnormalities.
